South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth has urged the Post Office to find an alternative home for the Muirhead branch in Troon after it was confirmed it will be closing in January.

Post Office said the closure is because of the resignation of the postmaster.

Colin Smyth said: “This latest news of yet another Post Office closure is very concerning. They have stated that the Muirhead branch is to close next month and I am now urging the Post Office to find an alternative as a matter of urgency.

“The Post Office is currently situated in a busy shopping area, so there may be other local businesses who will take on having a Post Office in their business.

“I know there are several other Post Offices in Troon but having a Post Office in the Muirhead community is important for so many local people, particularly those who are older or people who can’t travel easily.

“Sadly, right across South Scotland we have seen closure after closure of Post Offices and complete inaction by the UK Government to keep them open.

“This latest closure would be a huge blow to the region, in particular people in Muirhead and a further cut in the number of Post Offices across Ayrshire.”
