South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth has accused Tory MPs Alister Jack and David Mundell of helping prop up discredited Prime Minister Boris Johnson, after they failed to resign their Government posts.

At the time of writing, two Secretary of States, four Ministers, six Parliamentary Private Secretaries, two Trade Envoys, the Solicitor General and Vice Chair of the Conservative Party have all quit their posts. However, Alister Jack remains as Secretary of State for Scotland and David Mundell as Trade Envoy to New Zealand .

Colin Smyth said: “If Boris Johnson had a shred of respect for the office of Prime Minister or an ounce of decency, he would have quit a long time ago.

“Alister Jack really is no better than Boris Johnson if he continues to fail to recognise what more and more of his colleagues are realising – the Prime Minister is not fit for the role.

“I appreciate that Alister Jack knows that if Boris Johnson goes, the next Leader isn’t going to appoint him to the Cabinet but that’s no excuse for demeaning the office of Secretary of State for Scotland by putting his own job before the good of the country.

“After months of dithering, David Mundell claims he has eventually decided Boris Johnson should resign but it’s a shame he doesn’t have the courage of his convictions by following his colleagues and quitting his Government role.

“Simply saying the Prime Minister should go won’t budge him. Mr Mundell needs to step up to the mark and force him out the door. That will only happen if Tory MPs quit their roles, otherwise they are culpable in propping up this discredited Prime Minister. David Mundell needs to stop putting junkets before the growing demand of his constituents who want Boris Johnson to go.”
