South Scotland Labour MSP has accused local Conservative MP’s Alistair Jack and David Mundell of being “out of touch” with their constituents after they voted for Theresa May’s failed Brexit deal.

Both Alistair Jack and David Mundell voted for Theresa May’s Brexit Deal in the House of Commons on Tuesday 15th of January. The Government lost the vote with 432 MP’s voting to reject the deal and 202 MP’s voting for the deal- the biggest defeat for a Government for over a hundred years.

Colin Smyth said, “The vote on the Prime Minister’s Brexit Deal was a humiliating defeat for her personally and the Tory Government. It was entirely predicted which is why it was so farcical to see local MPs Alistair Jack and David Mundell still pretend right up until the vote that it could have been agreed

The damaging divisions we have seen in recent months have been caused as a result of this Conservative Government and their utter failure to negotiate any form of credible deal . Not once has Theresa May talked or listened to other parties to reach consensus and when it was apparent she would lose the vote before Christmas she purposely delayed the inevitable.

By supporting this failed deal Alistair Jack and David Mundell have shown that they are hopelessly out of touch with their constituents. It is clear that we now need a General Election to kick out this tired Conservative Government. Only by securing a General Election can we ensure that the most important issues to people living in Dumfries and Galloway such as living standard, jobs, wage growth and public services  are put firmly at the top of the political agenda.”
