In celebration of Apprenticeship Week 2018, South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth visited ‘AMD Contract Services’ in Dumfries to find out more about the important role apprentices play in the work of the company.

Apprenticeship Week aims to raise awareness to potential apprentices about the benefits of taking on an apprenticeship with being able to both work, earn and learn new skills. The week also highlights the benefits to businesses of employing an apprentice.

This year Colin visited independent heavy equipment contractors, AMD Contract Services based in Lochside in Dumfries and met with 3 of the apprentices working at the firm.

The firm employs 6 apprentices as the company continues to expand.

Colin Smyth said, “It was great to visit a local firm who are not only growing their business but have apprentices at the heart of their growth.

Too often school leavers and indeed people looking for a career change over look apprenticeships as a route into the jobs market. This is despite the fact an apprenticeship offers a huge range of opportunities to learn and earn in a new role.

Apprenticeship are also good for the business itself. It allows them to not only develop new talent in the work force and bring in fresh ideas but the business also benefits from the fact the apprenticeships are supported by college learning.
