South Scotland Labour MSP Colin Smyth has nominated Anas Sarwar to be the next Scottish Labour Party Leader.

The leadership contest follows the resignation of previous leader Richard Leonard on Thursday.

The new leader will be declared on 27 February.

South Scotland Labour MSP Colin Smyth said: “I’m disappointed for Richard and the party that his time as leader didn’t work out.

“Richard was leader during an incredibly difficult period for Labour and the country, and he served with dedication to the values of our movement.

“Time is tight until the next election and we now need a leader who will hit the road running to take our message to every community across Scotland.

“I believe Anas Sarwar is the best candidate to do that, which is why I have nominated him for Scottish leader.

“He has listened and learned over the past few years and has the experience, presence and determination to lead our party in what will be one of the most important elections the country has ever faced.

“Labour needs a leader people know, and one committed to the challenges our country faces – ending poverty, healing our health service as we come out of the pandemic and tackling climate change. These are Anas’ priorities and I believe those of the South of Scotland’s.”
