Colin Smyth MSP
South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth has commented on the news that company Dale Farm has launched a consultation about potentially closing the Rowan Glen factory in Newton Stewart.
In a statement, Dale Farm said it recognised and appreciated the “loyalty, hard work and commitment’’ from employees.
It is now entering into a period of consultation with the people who are affected.
Colin Smyth said: “This is devastating news for Newton Stewart and in particular the staff who are potentially facing losing their jobs.
“My thoughts are with them and their families, and I will be urging the company to do all they can to assist their staff in any way they can.
“Industry across our region is facing huge challenges right now, from negotiating Brexit and the aftermath of the Covid pandemic to sky rocketing energy bills.
“Unfortunately, I fear that this won’t be the last business to look at closing down its sites and I have already been in touch with the Scottish Government and local agencies to urge them to provide as much support to secure a future for the Rowan Glen site and those local jobs at risk.”
