Prime Minister Boris Johnson may have won Monday’s vote of no confidence, but he should do the right thing and resign, according to South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth.

Conservative MPs voted in favour of Boris Johnson remaining as their leader by 211 to 148 in the vote on Monday.

However, having lost the support of two fifths of his own MPs, Colin Smyth has said his position is now untenable.

The local MSP said: “The vote for Boris Johnson shows the Tory Party are ignoring the views of the public.

“Sue Gray’s report was clear. Boris Johnson lied to Parliament and lied to the people, yet a majority of Tory MPs believe this is acceptable. We now have a Prime Minister limping on, continuing to take people in our region for fools.

“It’s becoming increasingly clear that it’s not just Boris Johnson who is unfit to govern, but his party and the only way to rid the country of them will be at the next election.”
