South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth has said Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak must resign, following the news that they, along with the PM’s wife Carrie, have received notification of the fines from the Metropolitan Police, following an investigation into illegal parties in Downing Street during Covid lockdowns.

The local MSP has also called on local Tory MPs and MSPs to break their silence and say whether they back the discredited Prime Minister.

Colin Smyth said: “During lockdown, I had constituents on the phone in tears because they missed the funerals of family and friends at a time Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak were partying in Downing Street.

“While local people were abiding by the rules, no matter how hard they were, the Prime Minister, Chancellor and more were breaking them. They think it’s one rule for them and another for everyone else.

“If Johnson and Sunak had a shred of decency they would resign but they don’t, so they won’t .”

Colin Smyth also criticised south Scotland’s Tory MPs, MSPs and Councillors for failing to call for Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak to resign.

Colin Smyth said, “The failure of local Tory MPs, MSPs and Councillors to call for Johnston and Sunak to go, shows they are no better than them. Their spinless inaction displays utter contempt for their constituents who followed the rules and were separated from their loved ones for months while Tory politicians thought they were above the law .

“The fact some are using the tragedy of events in Ukraine as cover to say it’s ok to have a Prime Minister and Chancellor who wilfully break the law is the lowest form of politics and shows just how far they will stoop to defend the indefensible and cove the back for their bosses”.
