Commenting on the First Minister’s statement to the Scottish Parliament today (Thursday 20 August) on the next phase of lockdown easing, South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth said:
“I welcome the decision to bring forward the date for the re-opening of gyms and swimming pools to 31 August. I know those who run gyms locally have worked hard to put in place a regime needed to keep us fit and healthy when this long overdue re-opening happens. The health impact of this terrible virus has been absolutely devastating but so too has the health impact of the lockdown on many peoples physical and mental health. Gyms are key part of the solution to that not the cause and it is right they should be allowed to re-open.
However, as the lifting of lockdown continues in a number of fronts it is more important than ever that we take precautions to keep ourselves and our communities safe. We need to continue to act responsibly and use common sense.
“We should never lose sight of the fact this virus is still out there and ultimately saving lives is the most important consideration in everything we do”.
