South Scotland Labour MSP Colin Smyth has shown his support for Samaritans Awareness Day.

The Awareness Day held on the 24th July marks and celebrates the work carried out by the charity 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year. In particular it is an opportunity to thank the thousands of volunteers who give up their time for the charity to enable it to support those suffering from isolation and suicidal thoughts.

Colin Smyth MSP is a proud supporter of the charity all year round and meets regularly with the charity and has signed a motion lodged in the Scottish Parliament to show his support.

Colin Smyth said, “On a daily basis volunteers with the Samaritans across South Scotland support those in a time of need. The Samaritans and their volunteers provide emotional support for those suffering from feelings of isolation and disconnection, many of whom have contemplated suicide. It is important we recognise the contribution the Samaritans make to supporting our most vulnerable people. I would encourage local people who are interested in helping the Samaritans to get involved whether that’s in the role of listening to people going through a tough time or helping in other ways such as fundraise. There are over 200 branches across the UK, including in our region. Crucially, I would urge anyone who feels under pressure or is going through a difficult time to talk to someone”.
