South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth has been given a new role in Scottish Labour’s National Recovery Team.

The local MSP is now Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Economic Development and Rural Affairs.

Colin Smyth said: “Having lived and worked in the south of Scotland my whole life, I am happy to champion the interests of those living in our rural area.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has had a terrible impact on people living in all parts of Scotland but those in rural parts have suffered more than most due to their reliance on some of the sectors hit hardest by lockdown, for example tourism and hospitality.

“However, even before Covid, rural communities were suffering from a lack of significant investment from governments both in Holyrood and Westminster. In this new role I intend to do all I can, not only for my rural constituents but people living in all parts of rural Scotland.”
