South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth has commented on the latest Covid-19 update.

Speaking on Tuesday, the First Minister confirmed that as from Monday 17 May, six people from three households can meet inside.

Physical distancing will be eased in private homes and gardens, meaning people will be able to hug their friends and family again.

Alcohol can be served indoors in pubs, cafes and restaurants until 10.30pm from Monday.

Cinemas, bingo halls and amusement arcades can reopen. Adult outdoor contact sports and indoor group exercises can resume.

Colin Smyth said: “We have now been living in the shadow of Covid-19 for more than a year, so the news that restrictions are being eased further will be welcomed by many.

“However, we must not forget that until we are all vaccinated, Covid-19 is still out there and we must take precautions to keep ourselves and our communities safe.

“Moving to Level 2 restrictions will mean that indoor mixing is allowed, and people will not have to adhere to physical distancing, which a lot of people will be very happy about. This pandemic has created a real mental health crisis for many people and hopefully these rule changes will allow people to connect with family and friends again.

“However, while the Covid-19 pandemic is first and foremost a health crisis, it is also a terrible economic crisis which will continue for a long time to come. The UK and Scottish Government need to get their act together and ensure support is in place to get local firms through the coming months.”
